The lake is on Arroyo Valle (Spanish for "creek of the valley") in the Diablo Range, and is formed by Del Valle Dam, completed in 1968 (56 years ago) (). [2] The lake and dam are part of the California State Water Project, as part of the South Bay Aqueduct. The lake serves in part as off-stream storage for the South Bay Aqueduct.
Headlands Beach State Park is at the northern terminus of State Route 44 and the Buckeye Trail. [5] The park is between the Mentor Marsh and the Grand River.It is next to Fairport Harbor Coast Guard station and a Morton Salt mine [6] and abuts two other protected areas, Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve to the east and Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve to the west.

Alum Creek Lake was constructed from 1970 to 1974 as part of the Flood Control Act of 1962. Alum Creek Dam was constructed on Alum Creek, a tributary of Big Walnut Creek, which drains into the Scioto River. Alum Creek Reservoir holds 3,387 acres (1,371 ha) of water and is open to fishing, boating, ice fishing, ice boating, and swimming.
