The MIT Global Startup Workshop (MIT GSW) was founded in 1997 when the MIT $50K (now the MIT $100K) Entrepreneurship Competition received numerous queries from around the world from organizations interested in starting and improving their own business plan competitions (BPCs). The first MIT GSW was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts in March 1998.
In 2006, the $50K grant competition also added another aspect to the competition focused on business plans for low-income communities to complement the traditional business venture competition. Subsequently, the competition has rebranded itself with a larger grant amount of $100K and is called the MIT $100K Pitch Contest.
The Yale Venture Challenge was previously known as Y50K. It was held annually in April, and awarded up to $25,000 in grants to student entrepreneurs.
