Originally in April 1870 The Town of Roanoke Island was christened as the County Seat. In May of that year the town's name was changed to Manteo. The town of Manteo was the first place on in Dare County to have a federal post office. Roanoke Island went from being the outpost of Currituck to being the center of power in the new county.

Construction on the house began in 1848 and was completed in 1851 [5] by Asa Tift, a marine architect and salvage wrecker, in a French Colonial estate style. [6] The house's site, across the street from the Key West Lighthouse, [7] has an elevation of 16 feet (4.9 m) above sea level, making it the second-highest site on the island.
