The rear portion of the roof remained removable through 1991. For 1982, GM reused the Blazer/Jimmy nameplates for its first compact SUVs. Both to distinguish the two model lines and to denote their pickup truck commonality, GM added a S10/S15 model prefix, as the K5 models were officially renamed the "Chevrolet Full-Size Blazer" and "GMC K-Jimmy."
The chassis was an all-new design (with all trucks receiving a leaf-spring rear suspension); K-Series trucks moved to all-wheel drive (shift-on-the-fly 4×4 was introduced for 1981). In 1970, GMC introduced its own model of the truck, called the Jimmy, which was discontinued in 1991 and replaced by the Yukon.
For 1977, a horizontal body line was introduced past the front doors, while fender and rear door badging were updated to match the design of the C/K pickup trucks. Offered on a longer wheelbase, a cutaway-chassis conversion of the G-series was marketed through Chevrolet and GMC as a cargo truck, as the Hi-Cube Van and MagnaVan, respectively.
A coil spring five-link rear suspension replaces the leaf springs for the 1500. This was the first traditional full-size pickup truck with rear coil springs since the 1972 Chevrolet/GMC C10 and C20 (although the Chevrolet Avalanche, an SUV-based pickup truck, used rear coil springs).
