The day before the race he was the favorite at 2:1 odds. It was his first 3-week turnaround. Sonny Leon rode. The horse did not do well, finished at the back of the pack.

The following year the track renamed the event in honor of Risen Star to the Risen Star Stakes. In 1991 the distance of the event was increased to 1 + 1 ⁄ 16 miles [3] and in 2002 the American Graded Stakes Committee upgraded the race to Grade III. The inaugural running of the event was on 30 June 1979 at Hollywood Park Racetrack as the Silver Screen Handicap at a distance of 1 + 1 ⁄ 8 miles and was won by the promising three year old Valdez who won by 10 lengths, [1] which continues to be the longest winning margin in the event.

More significantly, he was the youngest sire among the top 10 on the North American general leading sires list with more than $7.36 million in progeny earnings. The sire stood in 2023 for $135,000.
