Wexford County is a county in the Northern Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 33,673. Lake Mitchell is one of two lakes in Wexford County, Michigan, that are joined by the Clam Lake Canal. The other lake is Lake Cadillac. Mitchell State Park is located on Lake Mitchell. Bluegill, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Black Crappie, Rock Bass, Northern Pike, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Bullhead are types of fish in Lake Mitchell. [3]
The community began as a railway station along the Ann Arbor Railroad in 1888. For state purposes, the Manistee County portion was named Churchills within Cleon Township, and the Wexford County portion was named Harlan and given a post office on March 31, 1890. The post office closed briefly in 1906 but remained in operation until July 15, 1935.
