The Czechoslovak Legion (Czech: Československé legie; Slovak: Československé légie) were volunteer armed forces consisting predominantly of Czechs and Slovaks [1] fighting on the side of the Entente powers during World War I and the White Army during the Russian Civil War until November 1919.
By the autumn of 1918, the legion no longer played an active part in the Russian civil war. After the coup against the Provisional All-Russian Government , and the installment of Alexander Kolchak 's military dictatorship, Czechoslovaks were withdrawn from the front, and assigned the task of guarding the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Josef Jiří Švec (19 July 1883 – 25 October 1918) was a Czech military officer, member of Česká družina and later of the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia; he had formerly been a teacher. He committed suicide after the men under his command refused to obey his orders. He is one of the most commemorated members of the Czechoslovak legions.
