The files provided by GoPro seem to be the firmware 3.11 update which appears to only be for the 3+ Black. There is an archive on Github for GoPros from original Hero to Hero4 that specifies 3.10 as the Silver firmware update. Downloaded those and it worked just as it should, by adding the UPDATE folder to the SD Card and booting the camera.

#1 files inside UPDATE.zip needed to be extracted into the ROOT of micro SD card, not into UPDATE folder and then have that folder copied into micro SD card as you suggested. HD3.09-firmware.bin needed to be renamed to HD3.01-firmware.bin, otherwise update fail. Why these problems exist ?
It seems to me that the SD card that I have and using via an adapter (also tried directly via the GoPro plugged in) so you put the small sd card (scan disk ultra plus 16gb) inside the reader then into the USB port cannot be written to as it is protected and there is nothing that you can seem to do to unprotect the card and move over the update file.
Unzipped the update. Copied the Update folder to the microsd, nothing else. Insert the card in the gopro. power it on and no update. redownloaded the update files. reformated. tried again. tried a different USB. Even tried the original update file I used successfully in the past. No go. Micro SD's are working fine.
When saving the update file, make sure to copy the UPDATE folder to the root of the SD card. Please try running the update again. You may want to select Wi-Fi+Firmware. Let us know how it goes. Thanks! Ej
