This evening has a narrower time range than tonight. In your context it is fine; 6 pm is evening, in Britain at any rate. But while I might say 'tonight after work' to mean 5 pm, I would not use 'this evening' for anything that early. Similarly, I wouldn't say 'this evening at midnight', whereas 'tonight at midnight' is fine.
