Frederick County was created from Orange County in 1738, and was officially organized in 1743. [5] The Virginia Assembly named the new county for Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales [6] (1707–1751), the eldest son of King George II of Great Britain.

Built between 1794 and 1797, the large Federal -style manor house is a National Historic Landmark and was opened to the public by its owners, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP), as a historic house museum in 1967.
