Golf in Ireland dates to at least the mid-19th century, with the Royal Curragh Golf Club (the first golf club in Ireland) being founded in 1858. [1] The two "oldest governing bodies in world golf", the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) and the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU), were formed in 1891 and 1893 respectively.
There is also a notable golf course, the Royal Dornoch Golf Club, named No. 2 on the 2024/24 Golf Digest list of Top 100 International (outside U.S.) courses. [8] It is also notable as the last place a witch was burnt in Scotland. Her name was reported as Janet Horne; she was tried and condemned to death in 1727.
