By the turn of the century, Hartwick's heyday was over; the community's founder, John Clark, had left the community in 1861, followed by several others. Clark's house was leased to the county as a poor farm. [4] By 1914, a history of the county called Hartwick a "forgotten village". [4]
The Delaware County Courthouse, located in Manchester, Iowa, United States, was built in 1894. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 as a part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource. [1] The current structure is the fourth building to house court functions and county administration.
In 1886 and 1887, the Chicago Great Western Railway was built through Delaware County. The railroad company built four rail stations: one each in Almoral, Oneida, Dundee, and Thorpe. [3] In 1911, D.T. Wonleighton built a general store in Thorpe. He later served as the general manager of the Mayen mercantile in Thorpe.
