The Royal Muskoka Hotel was the first grand hotel built on the Muskoka Lakes. [1] The project grew out of the Muskoka and Georgian Bay Navigation Company, which had been founded in 1880 by Alexander Peter Cockburn (1837–1905). [2] By the turn of the century, his shipping business had declined due to the expansion of railways.
