Chillicothe Correction Institution, or CCI, is a state-run medium security prison on the west bank of the Scioto River just outside Chillicothe, Ohio. It is located adjacent to Ross Correctional Institution and Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. The prison is a former military camp, named for Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman.
Ohio's prison system is the sixth-largest in America, with 27 state prisons and three facilities for juveniles. In December 2018, the number of inmates in Ohio totaled 49,255, with the prison system spending nearly $1.8 billion that year. [2] ODRC headquarters are located in Columbus. [3]
Ohio's Richland Correctional Institution is also located in Mansfield. The facility opened in 1990 and has a capacity of 2,523 inmates. [1] In 2005 the state's death row inmates were transferred from Mansfield to the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown, Ohio. [2] Those inmates have since been moved to Chillicothe Correctional Institution.
OSP does retain death row cells for inmates who are considered the highest security risk. As of 2019, six high security death row inmates remain at OSP, four of whom were involved in the 1993 Lucasville prison riot at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. [1] [2] Ohio State Penitentiary currently holds level 5, 4, 3 and 1 inmates.

Two inmates who escaped from an Ohio prison this week did so by concealing themselves in a dumpster, the state department of corrections said Friday as a search for one of the men continued.

The facility first opened in 1992 and has a population of 1,529 state inmates, with mixed minimum, medium, and close (maximum) security levels. [1]
