The oldest house in the area is an 1843 Greek Revival structure at 3 Wildwood Street. Two houses were built near Wedge Pond in the 1850s and 1860s, of which the Charles Curtis House (1965, 9-11 Grassmere Avenue) is a particularly fine example of Carpenter Gothic; the Bellows House, built in 1854, is also Gothic Revival in character.
South Street runs from Main Street in Stoneham, at its junction with a newer section of North Border Road, for about 0.25 miles (0.40 km) east-southeast to a point where it merges into Pond Street. There is a grassy area, including a parking area, that provides fine views of Spot Pond, along this stretch of road.
It is roughly bounded Mt. Vernon and Washington Streets, Waterfield Road, Church and Main Streets. The district includes a number of Romanesque Revival buildings, including Winchester Town Hall and the Winchester Savings Bank building on Mount Vernon Street. In addition to being a state park, portions of the park and structures within it are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.The entire area surrounding Spot Pond to the east of I-93 is within the Middlesex Fells Reservoirs Historic District, and the roadways in the park and on its borders are listed as the Middlesex Fells Reservation Parkways.

The Wedgemere Historic District is located west of Winchester's town center, and just east of Cambridge Street (Massachusetts Route 3), a major north–south artery in the town. It is bounded on the north by Warren Street, on the east by Wildwood and Fletcher Streets, and on the south by Church Street.
