Fred Meyer, Inc. is an American chain of hypermarket superstores and subsidiary of Kroger based in Portland, Oregon. [1] The stores operate in the northwestern United States, with locations in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska.
A Fred Meyer grocery store is located at 5230 W. Franklin St. in Boise. Fred Meyer and Kroger merged in 1998. Kroger says it plans to buy Idaho’s Albertsons chain.
The Fred Meyer stores were rebranded as Fry's Marketplace, unifying the stores under the Fry's brand. The full size Fred Meyer store in Phoenix was completed but never opened and was later demolished to build a Walmart, as the store was too large for Fry's to use, with Fred Meyer’s expansion plans for Arizona scrapped.
The next year in 1999 Fred Meyer along with Food 4 Less were acquired by Kroger [6] In 2015, Food 4 Less exited the Nevada market entirely. Six of the stores were converted to sister store Smith's Food and Drug, a prominent grocery chain owned by Kroger in the Las Vegas area. The remaining eight stores were closed. [7]
In 2011, Rouses opened a 40,000-square-foot full service grocery store in the Central Business District of New Orleans, ending 45 years without. [6] In 2013, Rouses expanded into Alabama by taking ownership of six Belle Foods stores in the Mobile area. [7] The first of those stores opened in Theodore, Alabama on February 9, 2014. [8]

Meyer (February 21, 1886 – September 2, 1978) [3] was an American businessman who founded the Oregon-based Fred Meyer store chain, which had 63 stores in four western states at the time of his death.
