On October 31, 1963, a gas explosion occurred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum in Indianapolis, United States, killing 81 people and injuring about 400 others. It was one of the worst disasters in the history of the state. On the night of October 31, over 4,000 people were in the coliseum to watch a Holiday on Ice performance.

James William Fesler (1864-1949) was an Indianapolis attorney and served on the IU Board of Trustees from 1902 to 1936. He served as Vice President of the Board from 1916-1919 and President from 1919-1936. A 1993 inventory of the library's holdings included 60,000 books and pamphlets, 3,500 collected manuscripts, 1.5 million images, and 1,000 maps. Some of this included not only the history of Indiana, but that of the Old Northwest as well. [8] It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1995.
