Bastar state was a princely state in India during the British Raj. It was founded in the early 13th century by Annamaraja, a brother of the last ruler of the Kakatiya dynasty , Prataparudra II . It is today used to refer to the same region, called Bastar division in Chhattisgarh state.

Jagdalpur is a city located in the southern part of Chhattisgarh state in India. It is the administrative headquarters of the Bastar district and Bastar division. Before the independence of India, it also served as the capital of the erstwhile princely state of Bastar. It is the fourth largest city of Chhattisgarh.
Halbas were born of irregular alliances between the Odia Kings and their retainers with the women of their household servants, and between the different servants themselves. [14] They were employed in militia under various ruling dynasties of the region. [1] Halbas were also guards kings of Bastar for a long time. [15]
Traditionally the Madia have a Ghotul in every village where unmarried boys and girls assemble in the evening and play, mix, dance and sing until late night but return to their houses for sleeping, which marks the difference between Bastar Ghotuls and the Ghotuls of Madia Gonds. There is a taboo against married women entering a Ghotul. [11]
