Mission Bay Yacht Club (MBYC) is a private yacht club in San Diego, California, on the west side of Mission Bay. [1] [2]The club hosted the Snipe World Championships in 1997 and the club's Snipe fleet won the Commodore Hub E. Isaacks Trophy in 1969, 1971 and 1981.
In 1980 the original owner, Ward Proescher, sold the business to Terry MacRae and P. Michael Watson. Proescher later went on to start a competing charter yacht company in the Bay Area, Commodore Cruises. By acquiring existing charter yacht companies, Hornblower was able to expand into San Diego in 1984, followed by Newport Beach in 1987.
San Diego Yacht Club was the home of the America's Cup from 1988 to 1995 and hosted three America's Cup races during that time. San Diego Yacht Club was the original home of the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup, one of the pre-eminent events in Southern California racing, which is held in the ocean off San Diego every year. [2]
