The Il-96-300 is the initial variant and is fitted with Aviadvigatel (Soloviev) PS-90A turbofans with a thrust rating of 16,000 kgf (157 kN, 35,300 lbf). Development started in the mid-80s while the first prototype flew on 28 September 1988. The first Il-96 entered service with Aeroflot in 1993.
The main presidential aircraft is the four-engined, long-range, widebody Ilyushin Il-96-300PU, a highly modified Il-96, with the two last letters standing for "Command Point" in Russian. The presidential fleet of planes also includes Ilyushin Il-62, Tupolev Tu-154, and Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft, among others.

The PS-90A-76 is the standard on the newly built, modernized versions of the Il-76 , such as the Il-76MD-90A and the Il-76MF .

Up to and including 2018, the An-148 aircraft was produced in cooperation with Ukraine. Also the plant is engaged in the maintenance of IL-96 and An-148.
