The Countryside Stewardship Scheme was originally an agri-environment scheme run by the United Kingdom Government set up in 1991. In its original form it expired in 2014. The UK Government decided to be one of the first countries in Europe to introduce the Single Payment Scheme and decided to start to phase it in from 2005. Introduction in the UK was strategically coordinated via Defra , with devolved responsibility to England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to independently implement the scheme.
Governments also had limited discretion to continue to direct a small proportion of the total subsidy to support specific crops. Alterations to the qualifying rules meant that many small landowners became eligible to apply for grants and the Rural Payments Agency in England received double the previous number of applications (110,000).
As part of the application process for funding, it requires funded organisations to outline the difference that should come about as a result of its funding. The National Lottery Community Fund uses several methods to distribute funding. Most of its grants go to voluntary and community organisations which apply within a range of funding programmes.
