The Alberta Sheriffs Branch [1] is a provincial law enforcement agency overseen by the Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services [2] of the province of Alberta, Canada. Under the authority of the Peace Officer Act , Alberta Sheriffs are provincial peace officers with jurisdiction over the province of Alberta.
The facility was opened in 1985 and operated by the province of Alberta (Correctional Services of the Ministry of Solicitor General and Public Security) as the Grande Cache Correctional Centre [1] until 1995. At that time, Correctional Service of Canada took possession of the property under a long-term lease from the province. [2]
Calgary Remand Centre was established 1993 with a capacity of 430. In 2005, it was renovated to house more inmates; in 2017, the capacity was listed as 704 inmates. [3] As of 2017, CRC was scheduled for renovation due to over-crowding and problems concerning inmates' safety. [3]
