This is a list of archives in the United Kingdom. As of 2009 [update] there were 122 national, 654 local, 328 university, 1,224 special and 61 business archives. [ 1 ]
The list is managed by Historic England (formerly English Heritage), and currently includes about 1,600 sites. [ 1 ] As with listed buildings , parks and gardens are graded on a scale: Grade I being internationally significant sites; these are therefore the most important and constitute around 10% of the total number.
Images of England was a stand-alone project funded jointly by English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund.The aim of the project was to photograph every listed building and object (some 370,000) in England and to make the images available online to create, what was at the time, one of the largest free-to-view picture libraries of buildings in the world.
