Columbus quickly outgrew Williams High. A new facility was built in 1898 for approximately $24,000. The building was called one of the "finest public schools to date" in Nebraska. An addition was added in 1904, and it was used as the high school until 1925 when it became Columbus Junior High School. The building was demolished in the late 1950s.

The school was founded in 1884 as St. Francis Academy by the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate of Joliet, Illinois, after the sisters added secondary grades to an elementary school they had founded in 1878. [2] St. Bonaventure Catholic Church purchased the school from the order in 1925 and renamed it St. Bonaventure High School.

Walter Dietrich Behlen (October 16, 1905 – July 26, 1994) was born on a small farm near Columbus, Nebraska. [1] He was the second of nine children born to Fred and Ella Behlen. His high school education was interrupted by illness, but he returned to school at age 20, and received his diploma at age 23.
