The Walnut Whip was launched in 1910. [4] By 1916 the Beaverhall factory was six times its original size and business was flourishing. [5] The business was acquired by Rowntree in 1927 but retained the Duncan's brand name. In 1967 the Edinburgh factory was closed to all items and concentrated solely on the Walnut Whip.
Between 1982 and 1987, the number of UK staff was reduced from 19,700 to 15,600. [6] In 1987, Rowntree operated 25 factories in nine countries and employed 33,000 people, including close to 16,000 in its eight UK operations.
