During World War II, Kansas was a major United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) training center for pilots and aircrews of USAAF fighters and bombers. Kansas was favored because it has excellent, year-round flying conditions. The sparsely populated land made ideal locations for gunnery, bombing, and training ranges.

In 1929 construction began on this airfield, which was Wichita Municipal Airport. In August 1941 a Kansas National Guard air unit was stationed. It was placed on active duty in October. During World War II most of the airfield was taken over by the Army Air Force. B-29 Superfortress bombers were manufactured here.
The Kansas Air National Guard's 184th Intelligence Wing, Wichita, officially changed its name 1 Aug. 2019 to the 184th Wing. In April 2008 the 184th Intelligence Wing became the first Intelligence Wing in the Air National Guard. The Wing encompasses a variety of missions at the federal, state, and community levels.
In 1987, the unit was reorganized as the 108th Aviation Regiment under the National Guards of Oregon, Kansas and Arizona. Eventually, the Texas Army National Guard took command of some elements of the 108th Aviation Regiment, and currently commands sections of the regiment along with the Kansas Army National Guard. [1]
