The history of the university dates back to the "Leiyang Academy" (雷阳书院) founded in 1636. In 1904, it started its education training program. In 1978, it became Leizhou Normal College, and was elevated to Zhanjiang Normal University in 1991. Zhanjiang Normal University changed its name to Lingnan Normal University in 2014.
A 6-year PharmD degree program has also been approved, with a student intake expected by 2011. In 2008, the College of Pharmacy became Qatar University's seventh college, which has received early accreditation by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP). It is currently the first and only pharmacy college in the country.

The university was established in 1958 as the Guangdong provincial health department's advanced studies college. In 1978, with the approval from the Chinese central government, the college became Guangdong Medical and Pharmaceutical College which offered undergraduate courses.
