A cook-off is a cooking competition where the contestants each prepare dishes for judging either by a select group of judges or by the general public. Cook-offs are very popular among competitors (such as restaurants) with very similar dishes, such as chili, and serves as a way to decide which recipe is the best for that particular dish.
Frank Tolbert co-founded the Terlingua Championship Chili Cook-Off in 1967, and in 1976 opened his first restaurant in Dallas, before moving to the current location in 2006.

The first Texas Chili Cook-off was held in 1994. [1] Attendance at the event was under 100 and only 8 chili teams competed. Today, the event draws upwards of 1,500 in attendance, has 36 teams competing and has a panel of 9 judges with professional experience in the food industry. The 2013 Cook-off is widely regarded as the most competitive to date.
