The National Medical Commission (NMC) was established in January 2019 by way of an ordinance, which later achieved permanency in the form of a law, after being passed by the Indian Parliament and approved by the President of India on August 8, 2019. It replaced the earlier Medical Council of India.
NMC was established in 1964 under Nepal Medical Council Act 1964. Chairman of NMC is nominated by Government of Nepal whereas Vice-Chairman is elected from NMC members. [5] NMC is one of many statutory bodies related to Healthcare in Nepal. It mainly deals with code and conduct of medical doctors registered in this council.
After completing the social service, a doctor obtains a "medical registration" at the governor's office (Gobernación) of the Department (province/state) where they served the obligatory term. This registration is the same as a license in other countries, and authorizes the physician to practice medicine anywhere in the national territory.
After the enactment of NMC Act 2019 in September 2019, NEET-UG became the sole entrance test for admissions to medical colleges in India including the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) which until then conducted separate exams. The Postgraduate Medical Education Board of NMC in its meeting held on 16.7.2024, decided to discontinue recognition for all CPS courses. Therefore, any admission into any PG Diploma or Fellowship courses of CPS Mumbai after 16.7.2024 stands non recognised by the National Medical Commission.
