Sligo Rovers Football Club was formed on 17 September 1928 as a result of an amalgamation of two junior sides, Sligo Town and Sligo Blues. Their first game was a 9–1 victory against Ballyshannon , a team from County Donegal in Ulster , on 23 September 1928 in the qualifying round of the Connacht Cup.

Sligo Rovers Football Club Women (Irish: Cumann Peile Ruagairí Shligigh na mBan) is an Irish association football club based in Sligo. In December 2021, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) announced the formation of the club as an expansion team for the upcoming 2022 Women's National League season.
