Comic Arts Los Angeles (abbreviated as CALA or Comic Arts LA) is a comic book festival held annually in Los Angeles, California. Inaugurated in 2014 at Think Tank Gallery, the festival showcases graphic novels , comic books , and zines created by independent artists and publishers. [ 1 ]
Meyer Flax moved his family to Los Angeles and established M. Flax Artist Supplies in 1931. His son, Harvey, opened a second store in 1950 in Westwood Village, that he managed for more than 50 years. When he retired in 2005, the art supply store was sold, yet Flax carried on in Los Angeles.
The store's original owners, Bill Liebowitz and Thom Smitham, opened Golden Apple Comics on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles in 1979. The original inventory of the store consisted of Thom's comic book and comic art collection and bags from the prior company that had occupied the building, a business called Golden Apple: thus, Golden Apple Comics was born.
