This is intended to be a complete list of properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Howard County, Texas. There are six properties listed on the National Register in the county. Two properties are Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks, and one is also a State Antiquities Landmark.
In 1853, disputes led to the building of a courthouse and town in the county's geographical center instead of in Burkeville, a community 11 miles north northeast of Newton. A second courthouse in Newton, a Second Empire style structure, was built in 1902–1903 with bricks from nearby Caney Creek, according to a Texas Historical Commission marker.
It was a two-story wooden frame structure and was abandoned when the county seat moved to Newton in 1853. It was demolished in the 1920s. [3] The third and current courthouse was built in 1902, replacing one constructed in 1853, also in Newton. It was designed and built by William Martin and Peter Moodie in the Second Empire style.
