The site was developed as a castle in the early 1800s by land agent Lemuel Punderson, one of the area's first settlers. After summer cottages, a hotel and Tudor-style lodge were constructed, the Ohio Division of Wildlife purchased the land and lake in 1948, then transferred control to the Division of Parks and Recreation for development as a state park in 1951.

Malabar Farm Inn is a historic stagecoach inn built in 1820. The two-story brick building was restored as a restaurant, offering home-cooked dining. The Malabar Inn Restaurant has operated sporadically in recent years, having closed in 2018, re-opened in 2021, and closed in July 2023.

Stage's Pond State Nature Preserve is a 178 acres (0.72 km 2) nature preserve with ponds in Walnut Township, Pickaway County, Ohio. The State Nature Preserve is located at 4792 Hagerty Road, north of the county seat of Circleville.
Marie J. Desonier State Nature Preserve is located in eastern Athens County, Ohio, United States. It is heavily forested, on Jordan Run near its headwaters, in Deep Hollow. The preserve features a loop trail, the Oak Ridge Trail, with two footbridges. This trail can be hiked in a two-mile loop, or as a 2.5-mile loop.
Siegenthaler-Kaestner Esker is a 37-acre (150,000 m 2) state nature preserve located in Champaign County, Ohio, United States. It contains an esker , kame , and kettle , all glacial landforms . It is an example of a sinuous esker, an ancient ice-walled stream channel which flowed through a Wisconsinan glacier 11,000-25,000 years ago.
