Tostig Godwinson (c. 1029 – 25 September 1066) [1] was an Anglo-Saxon Earl of Northumbria and brother of King Harold Godwinson. [2] After being exiled by his brother, Tostig supported the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada's invasion of England, and was killed alongside Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.
The family is named after Harold's father, Earl Godwin, who had risen to a position of wealth and influence in the 1020s under Danish King Cnut the Great. In 1045 Godwin's daughter, Edith , married King Edward the Confessor , and by the mid-1050s Harold and his brothers had become dominant, almost monopolising the English earldoms.
Godwin, Earl of Wessex, after whom the family is named, was the son of one Wulfnoth, probably to be identified with Wulfnoth Cild, [4] [5] a Sussex thegn who in 1009, having been accused of unspecified crimes, deserted the service of the English king Æthelred the Unready along with a fleet of twenty ships.

Edith was the daughter of Godwin, the most powerful earl in England. Her mother Gytha was sister of Ulf, a Danish earl who was Cnut the Great's brother-in-law. She was probably born in or before 1027. [3] Edith was originally named Gytha, but renamed Ealdgyth (or Edith) when she married King Edward the Confessor. [4]
