Inchcape bought Joska Bourgeois's Japanese car distribution business, the International Motor Company, for £14.6 million in 1979. [ 9 ] Reincorporated as Inchcape plc in 1981, the company acquired during the 1980s several petrol, textile, electronic and mineral testing and inspection companies and formed a specific testing business stream.
The company was founded by Sukhpal Singh Ahluwalia, when he opened a motor parts shop in Willesden, London in 1978. The business was originally established to supply parts for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volkswagen vehicles. In October 2011, the company was sold to LKQ Corporation of Chicago, for £225 million. The firm plans to return around £100 million to shareholders through a share buyback after the sale is completed.
