Sassoon becomes friends with another patient, Wilfred Owen. Owen aspires to be a poet and respects Sassoon's work; Sassoon agrees to help him with his poetry. Meanwhile, Rivers has developed his own mental health problems by proxy from dealing his patients' trauma and so takes a leave of absence to visit Lewis Yealland's medical practice in London.
Written between September and October 1917, when Owen was a patient at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh recovering from shell shock, the poem is a lament for young soldiers who died in the European War. The poem is also a comment on Owen's rejection of his religion in 1915 [citation needed].
