The Portugal national football team (Portuguese: Seleção Portuguesa de Futebol) has represented Portugal in men's international football competitions since 1921. The national team is controlled by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), the governing body for football in Portugal .
Portugal have played against teams from every confederation. Their first international match was played on 18 December 1921 in Madrid against Spain , losing 3–1. [ 13 ] The team they have faced the most often is also Spain, with a total of 40 matches played.
In extra time, Portugal's Raphaël Guerreiro hit the crossbar from a free kick. Eder , a substitute striker, eventually scored the winning goal in the 109th minute. With this win, Portugal claimed its first ever major international trophy in the country's history, led by Cristiano Ronaldo as the captain.

The 2024–25 Taça de Portugal (also known as Taça de Portugal Generali Tranquilidade for sponsorship reasons) is the 85th edition of the Taça de Portugal, the premier knockout competition in Portuguese football. The winners qualified for the 2025–26 UEFA Europa League league stage. A total of 147 teams entered the cup.
