JCPenney was founded in 1902 as a group of dry goods stores that James Cash Penney managed as part of the Golden Rule chain, and incorporated under his own name in 1913. The stores initially located in downtown areas but shifted to shopping malls during the 1960s.
Original tenants included JCPenney, Younkers, Woolworth, Kirlin's Hallmark, County Seat, Karmelkorn, Bresler's Ice Cream, and Osco Drug. [3] The mall opened for business on March 30, 1977, comprising more than 40 stores. [4] In 1981, Woolworth converted the store to its Woolco division, before closing it in 1983. [5]
