The early history of the national archives of Scotland reflects Scotland's own troubled history. Many records were lost as a result of being taken out of the country first in the 13th century by Edward I during the Wars of Independence and later by Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century.

It administered the census of Scotland's population every ten years. [1] It also kept the Scottish National Health Service Central Register. [2] On 1 April 2011 it was merged with the National Archives of Scotland to form National Records of Scotland. [3] All the former department's functions continue as part of the new body.
The registration process in Scotland was conducted by the General Register Office for Scotland. The register was used as the basis for the NHS Central Register from 1948 onwards but, unlike in England and Wales, the original register books remained with the General Register Office and are now held by the National Records of Scotland (NRS). The Keeper of the Scottish Register of Tartans is the same person as the Keeper of the Records of Scotland and Registrar General for Scotland – roles that merged with the merger of the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) and General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) into the National Records of Scotland (NRS) in 2011.
