The Eastern Bloc, also known as the Communist Bloc (Combloc), the Socialist Bloc, and the Soviet Bloc, was an unofficial coalition of communist states of Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America that were aligned with the Soviet Union and existed during the Cold War (1947–1991).

The South was known as the "Republic of Vietnam". Việt Nam (Vietnamese pronunciation:) was the name adopted by Emperor Gia Long in 1804. [22] It is a variation of "Nam Việt" (南 越, Southern Việt), a name used in ancient times. [22] In 1839, Emperor Minh Mạng renamed the country Đại Nam ("Great South"). [23]
North Vietnam switched from UTC+8 to UTC+7 on 8 August 1967, with southern Vietnam doing likewise in 1975 at the end of the Vietnam War. As a result of the shift, North and South Vietnam celebrated Tết 1968 on different days. [5] This effect would see the solstice falling on 21 December in Hanoi, while it was 22 December for Beijing.
