The first person to report a fossil in the Antarctic was American naturalist James Eights in 1829, who landed probably on King George Island and found a fossilized log measuring 2.5 ft (0.76 m) in length and 4 in (100 mm) in diameter. Eights left the fossil where he found it, rather than collecting and formally describing it. [5]
The flightless midge Belgica antarctica, the largest purely terrestrial animal in Antarctica, reaches 6 mm (1 ⁄ 4 in) in size. [ 114 ] Antarctic krill , which congregates in large schools , is the keystone species of the ecosystem of the Southern Ocean, being an important food organism for whales, seals, leopard seals , fur seals, squid ...
A map of the Antarctic region, including the Antarctic Convergence and the 60th parallel south The Antarctic Plate. The exception was the Antarctic Peninsula, where warming was pronounced and well-documented; [23] it was eventually found to have warmed by 3 °C (5.4 °F) since the mid 20th century. [24] Based on this limited data, several papers published in the early 2000s said there had been an overall cooling over continental Antarctica outside the Peninsula.
As of today, there have been 138 possible volcanoes identified in West Antarctica. [3] There is limited knowledge about West Antarctic Volcanoes due to the presence of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which heavily covers the West Antarctic Rift System —a likely hub for volcanic activity. [ 4 ]
The first women to have any fanfare about their Antarctic journeys were Caroline Mikkelsen who set foot on an island of Antarctica in 1935, [144] and Jackie Ronne and Jennie Darlington who were the first women to over-winter in Antarctica in 1947. [145] The first woman scientist to work in Antarctica was Maria Klenova in 1956. [146]

The Antarctic continental shelf is a submerged piece of the Antarctic continent that underlies a portion of the Southern Ocean — the ocean which surrounds Antarctica. The shelf is generally narrow and unusually deep, its edge lying at depths averaging 500 meters (the global mean is around 100 meters), with troughs extending as far as 2000 ...
