In 1835, Portugal divided into districts, which were subdivided into counties and parishes. Estremadura Province included Districts of Lisbon, Santarém, Leiria and part of Setúbal with Lisboa as its capital. [3] Maps from this time show six provinces, of which Estremadura was one, but this was not official with the government. [3]
The New York Times has described the maps as "friendly" but "with attitude", [2] while the Washington Post has called them "charmingly illustrated and elegantly hand-lettered". [3] Reviews have not always been positive, as one reviewer from about.com , while giving the map generally favorable ratings, found the San Francisco map "too busy".
