The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) track and field system has been touted as one of the main reasons for the success of the United States on the global stage of athletics. [1] All of the collegiate records come from athletes competing in the NCAA, with the exception of the outdoor women's 1500 metres record (NAIA).
The distance medley relay has been held at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships annually since 1967. Since 1997, the race consists of a 1200 meters leg followed by a 400 meters sprint, followed by an 800 meters leg and concluding with the 1600 meters anchor for a total distance of 4000 meters.
These two events are separate from the NCAA Men's Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships and NCAA Women's Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships held during the spring. The current team champions are Texas Tech, who won their first title in 2024. Arkansas have been the most successful program, with 21 team national titles.
