The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum is a museum at Lexington Park, Maryland, first opened in 1978, which preserves and interprets the Naval Air Station Patuxent River history and heritage of advancing US naval aviation technology with artifacts, photographs and film, documents, and related heritage memorabilia from Patuxent River and other naval stations.
After Naval Air Station South Weymouth closed in 1997, the Patriot Squadron of the Association of Naval Aviation created a historical society to establish a museum. [1] That year the group dedicated the Shea Memorial Grove, named after Lieutenant Commander John J. Shea, consisting of a park with a Douglas A-4B Skyhawk mounted on a pedestal. [2]
The museum moved into Building 12 on NAS Whidbey Island in February 2008. [6] [a] However, the site was less than ideal as security restrictions limited access. [8] In 2010, the museum was finally able to purchase a PBY and it was moved to the base that June. [9] However, plans to acquire a Douglas A-3 Skywarrior were cancelled in 2012. [10]
Meanwhile, the first phase of renovations to the museum, the replacement of a brick wall with windows and installation of an entrance walkway, began in May 2023. [2] The new entrance is intended to be dedicated in September 2023 as part of a reunion of Naval Air Station Brunswick personnel. [9]

[1] The Glenview Hangar One Foundation was founded by A. C. Realie in 1996 to preserve the eponymous 180,000 sq ft (17,000 m 2) hangar and turn it into a museum.
