There are three main theories about the derivation of "kērala". (1) According to Hindu mythology, parts of Kerala were created by Lord Parashurama, who reclaimed the land from the sea. Hence the name is derived from Malayalam words, cērnna ("added") and ālam ("land"), hence the Sanskrit keralam, "the land added on".
