Hellroaring Mountain is located in the Absaroka Range which is a subrange of the Rocky Mountains. [1] It is set within Yellowstone National Park, [2] with the summit in Montana and the lower south slope in Wyoming. [6] Precipitation runoff from the mountain's slopes drains into Hellroaring Creek which is a tributary of the Yellowstone River.
Absaroka National Forest is a U.S. national forest in the U.S. state of Montana, established by the United States General Land Office on September 4, 1902, as the Absaroka Forest Reserve with a total area of 1,311,600 acres (5,308 km 2).
The wilderness spans the Montana-Wyoming border on Gallatin, Custer and Shoshone National Forests and is composed of 944,000 acres (3,820 km 2). [5] The elevation ranges from 0 to 11,000 feet (3,400 m); the maximum elevation is at the Beartooth Plateau, located high in the Beartooth Mountains.

The Absaroka Range is a sub-range of the Rocky Mountains in the United States. The range stretches about 150 mi (240 km) across the Montana – Wyoming border, and 75 mi (120 km) at its widest, forming the eastern boundary of Yellowstone National Park along Paradise Valley , and the western side of the Bighorn Basin .
