The New York State Summer School of the Arts was established in 1971, under Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, opening with the Orchestral Studies program. The "All-Stars" dance pool, introduced in season 7, is composed of notable past SYTYCD finalists who partner with new contestants for some of their routines. These non-competing dancers perform mainly in the genres that are their expertise and may perform only once or several times over the course of a season.
Applications to join the NYO-USA are made online between the August and November preceding the summer of participation, and include a brief biographical essay, two recommendations and an audition video including a piece of choice and several excerpts.
