The idea for an aviation museum in Hagerstown began in 1995 with a group of individuals that included Richard Henson, Kent Mitchell, John Seburn, and Kurtis Meyers. After a decade of delays, the museum opened to the public at the Discovery Station in downtown Hagerstown, Maryland on 14 July 2005.
The company was founded by Sherman Fairchild in 1924 as Fairchild Aviation Corporation, based in Farmingdale, and East Farmingdale, New York. It was established as the parent company for Fairchild's many aviation interests. The company produced the first US aircraft to include a fully enclosed cockpit and hydraulic landing gear, the Fairchild FC-1.
The Hagerstown Aviation Museum shows many of these original aircraft. Among the ones on display are: 1939 F24/UC-61C, 1945 C-82A, 1943 PT-19A, and the 1953 C-119. [18] The museum is located near Hagerstown Regional Airport in the airport's former terminal.
