I also say yes, surgical staples cause great pain. I have an inch or two of tiny staples inside me used to section off and remove my appendix 2.5 years ago. I have been in terrible pain ever since. I feel the staples inside of me, the way you feel an eyelash in your eye or a stone in your shoe. It is extremely painful.
