I have used Duraflame logs only as a starter or helper for real wood. One thing I do when starting a fire in the fireplace is to heat the flue before starting the fire. Open a window or door in the room a small amount. I wrap paper around the fire stoker, light it and hold it up the chimney. let the fire heat the chimney for a minute or two.

Duraflame makes 3 hour logs that last a long time and I believe a 2 hour one. I wrote them an email regarding this awhile back. But I had not had any other issues with their other logs. Another good brand is Pine Mountain. They make good 2 and 3 hour logs, and I can generally get about 2.5 hours out of the 2 hour one.

Just got my chimney inspected and cleaned a few weeks ago and it's supposedly working perfectly. After many days of "spare the air" no burn days (I am in the Bay Area) I was finally able to use the fireplace last night. To be more eco friendly decided to use the Duraflame crackling logs. I followed all the instructions and lighting it was a breeze.

"Enviro-Logs", made from cardboard and wax, sound even nastier than Duraflame. Still sounds less wacky than the Java-Log! With any high-density log, smoldering is a possibility, so you really need to get the fire off to a roaring start if you want it to do more than slowly smoke.

  6. Are gas logs warm without a blower? (my fireplace, furnace,...

Depends. Unvented gas logs are 100% efficient with no heat loss to the outside or anywhere else, but have issues with indoor air pollution and usually don't look like real fire. Vented gas logs, obviously, lose heat to the vent. If your gas logs are installed beneath an open chimney flue, then you'll probably have overall net heat loss.

They run on natural gas and the logs turn on and off via a switch on the wall next to the fireplace. Outside the house is a fake chimney chase that runs up the house. There is a metal "vent" type fixture outside the house just behind the gas logs. However, I don't have a damper. Tell me how I can determine if these are vented or non-vented logs ...

It will char and fall apart eventually if I use a Duraflame log, but the wood never actually catches fire. It's a real bummer. 11-15-2013, 08:25 PM

My 1924 house has a fireplace designed for gas -- there is a flue, but it vents fumes. If you try to burn logs the smoke won't draw. We had luck with the Duraflame logs, but those things stink up the house.

Just bought a duraflame infra red heater and it says on the box it can heat up to 1000 sq ft. I bought it mainly for the garage (450 sq ft) to keep Infra Red heater (Lowes, heaters, insulated, paint) - House -remodeling, decorating, construction, energy use, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, building, rooms - City-Data Forum
